Chapter Services to Members
Introduction to HFMA & Our Chapter
The Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) is a national organization
with more than 32,000 members who are employed by hospitals, integrated delivery
systems, managed care organizations, medical practice groups, long-term and ambulatory
care facilities, public accounting and consulting firms, insurance companies, government
agencies, and other organizations.
The Association represents its members and meets their needs by providing opportunities
for professional development and growth, influencing healthcare policy, and communicating
information and technical data.
HFMA was established on September 30, 1946, as the American Association of Hospital
Accountants by 126 hospital accountants who recognized a need for a group to address
their special professional requirements.
The member driven organization is governed by a Board of Directors that is elected
by the membership to serve as the primary policy setting body for the Association.
HFMA’s organizational structure is in three tiers-national, regional, and chapter.
Our chapter is one of four in the state of Ohio and we join the three chapters in
Michigan to form Region 6. Each region is served by a Regional Executive and National
Board Member who are the communication links among the chapters in the Region and
to National. In total, there are eleven regions comprising 70 chapters.
Our chapter was formed in 1954 with 33 members. Since that time we have grown to
approximately 300 members as of the latest count. Chapter sizes range from 19 to
over 1400 members.
The chapter is the fundamental, essential level of HFMA and provides the primary
service opportunity for individual members. Members are the lifeblood of HFMA. Not
only do the members provide the focus for the broad range of services and benefits
which HFMA delivers, members also provide the ideas and effort in helping to create
and ultimately administer these activities. Thanks to a broad range of professional
settings from accounting to senior financial management, from hospitals and nursing
homes to consulting firms and insurance companies, members express a wide variety
of viewpoints and opinions on key healthcare issues facing the industry, and guide
HFMA in representing the profession.
This section of the web site includes the HFMA mission statement, code of ethics
and statement of values, and elaborates on benefits to members. Follow the links
