President's Message

There’s no reason to go it alone. That is the first phrase that comes to mind when I think about why someone should join HFMA or why current members should make sure they are maximizing the benefits available to them. The healthcare finance field is extremely challenging and complex. There are many things we can learn on our own and through our own experiences, but with HFMA there truly is no reason to go it alone because there are so many resources available to help you.

The most obvious resource is the high quality education sessions that our Chapter provides throughout the year. Each month from September through April there is an educational forum on a different topic. The topics and speakers are carefully selected to ensure that we are providing the most relevant information on the most pressing issues you face in your jobs each and every day. In addition, we will again hold the May Institute on May 15 and 16 at Shaker Run Golf Course. Finally, be on the lookout for more “Lunch and Learns” at a location near you. These education sessions have proven to be very popular and satisfy our mission to provide relevant education that is convenient to access.

The other major benefit available to HFMA members is the opportunity to network with your peers. We all face many of the same challenges and it can be very beneficial to talk with our peers at other organizations and learn how they are dealing with the issues we all struggle with. The educational opportunities our chapter offers are structured to provide time to network with and get to know your colleagues. There are many long time members in our chapter that can attest to the benefit of the relationships they have made through HFMA. Getting involved in the chapter is a great way to begin developing the kind of friendships with your peers that can help you throughout your career.

Finally, HFMA provides a wealth of information at the national level that supplements what we are able to provide on a local level. The national HFMA organization is clearly the industry leader in the healthcare finance field and offers national/regional conferences, webcasts, and literature that can be absorbed and applied in your organization.

I hope I have convinced you that with all that is available there is no reason to go it alone in your own healthcare finance career so get out there, get involved, and take advantage of everything that is available to you as a member of HFMA!
