President's Message

“Step Up”, the HFMA Chair’s theme is an anthem to instill passion, collaboration, and empowerment to meet today’s challenges. When I hear the words, several messages come to mind. First, it evokes a feeling of having an advantage, such as a special skill set or knowledge, over a rival. Moreover, it conjures up images of climbing to the next rung on the career ladder. Last, it is a call to action, a “carpe diem” of sorts to seize an opportunity.

Perhaps these words resonate with me because I am beginning my year as Chapter President. If you are interested in continuing your education, learning “best practices” in your field, and staying in the “know”, our educational forums are a must. Our Program Committee is comprised of subject matter experts in Revenue Cycle, Finance, Accounting, etc. Similarly, if you like to network, dialogue with other professionals, and have some fun, attend one of the many social events planned by our Membership committee. We are proud to have a growing list of industry leaders as part of our chapter and our twelve percent increase in membership. Come out and meet us at the Reds Outing on June 30th. Most importantly, we are a volunteer organization. Our success depends on member involvement. We have a wonderful chapter with an amazing legacy. Under Gayla Harvey’s leadership, the chapter in 2009-2010, earned Henry Hottum Chapter Improvement Award and Gold Award of Excellence - Membership Growth and Retention and two Yerger Awards based on our collaboration with other chapters.

I urge you to attend an educational forum/institute, join a committee, and get certified! It’s your chapter and your year to “step up.”
